We spend so much of our time in a state of “Yang”, an active state, so to restore the balance, we also need to work with “Yin” practices, which have a calming and grounding effect.
What is Yin yoga?
Yin yoga is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and is performed close to the earth, mainly on the back or front part of the body.
Postures are usually held between 3-5 minutes when you are guided into a meditative state of breathing and awareness. During this time, your muscles relax and yield to gravity. You then go beyond the muscles to release tightness in the joints and delve deeper into the fascia.
This is the only form of Yoga that goes beyond the muscles and releases tension from both the mind and body. The magic of Yin happens when you find stillness and hold the pose for 3 minutes or more.
